A Chinese Jingdezhen Ceramic Famille Jaune (Yellow) Ginger Jar with lid

Writer: Bear and WolfBear and Wolf

Jingdezhen ceramics are among the most famous and highly regarded porcelain pieces in Chinese history. Jingdezhen, located in Jiangxi Province, has been a major centre of porcelain production for over 1,000 years, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD).

By the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties, it became the imperial kiln site, producing exquisite porcelain for the Chinese court.

Famille Jaune is a style of Chinese porcelain that falls under the broader category of Famille Verte but is distinguished by its yellow ground. It was developed during the Kangxi period (1662–1722) of the Qing Dynasty and is known for its vibrant overglaze enamels.

Ginger jars are traditional Chinese ceramic vessels, originally used to store spices like ginger, hence the name. They are typically round with a wide body, narrow neck, and a domed lid.

Traditionally made from porcelain, these jars were often decorated with blue-and-white designs, floral patterns, or symbolic motifs like dragons and phoenixes.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, ginger jars became popular in Europe as decorative pieces rather than functional storage containers. Today, the larger jars are widely used in interior design, often as statement pieces, vases, or even lamp bases.
